Actually, now that I think of it – I might move www.gmtaz.com over to tech.gmtaz.com and log.gmtaz.com over to www.gmtaz.com. I feel as though tech.gmtaz.com is going to go by the way side as I don’t really have that much time to put into writing out longer posts. We will see…

Guess what?? IE and jQuery are friends now! Yeah, not really… but I did find this awesome post on: http://www.joelanman.com/archives/15

Basically, it’s a jQuery plugin to remove the Filter CSS property from any element that get called by the fadeTo, fadeOut or fadeIn methods.

Really slick and really useful if you want to anti-alias the text you fade.

Here’s the snippet:

(function ($) {
$.fn.fadeIn = function (speed, callback) {
return this.animate({
opacity: 'show'
}, speed, function () {
if ($.browser.msie) {
this.style.removeAttribute('filter');
}
if ($.isFunction(callback)) {
callback.call(this);
}
});
};
$.fn.fadeOut = function (speed, callback) {
return this.animate({
opacity: 'hide'
}, speed, function () {
if ($.browser.msie) {
this.style.removeAttribute('filter');
}
if ($.isFunction(callback)) {
callback.call(this);
}
});
};
$.fn.fadeTo = function (speed, to, callback) {
return this.animate({
opacity: to
}, speed, function () {
if (to == 1 && $.browser.msie) {
this.style.removeAttribute('filter');
}
if ($.isFunction(callback)) {
callback.call(this);
}
});
};
})(jQuery);

ok, side note- Jason and I have launched our sister site, OSXology.com. This site is dedicated to developers and the such. It’s more of an advanced hints and tips site for speedy development and OS usage optimization. Lot’s a big words in there… basically, it’s trying to collect information to better our daily work lives on the mac…and perhaps on the PC. Maybe OSXalize the pc?? I guess OSXology is more of a state of mind and ethic than anything else.

Check it out…it’s just starting up so there isn’t much there but hopefully the content will start flowing.

Ok, I’m a liar…actually, it’s pretty mundane. I’m trying to find a place to live, preferably a studio sized apartment with utilities included and rent being less than or about $1200 a month. Yeah, that’s steep but welcome to Bethesda, MD. I’m taking a look at a couple of places in the area and hopefully will make a decision soon.

oh, not to mention that my credit isn’t so hot due to some extravagant college years…but hopefully my job will help me out in that department. If I’m rocking the $1200 a month spot that would mean I have a paycheck free and clear of any bills, including car payments, insurance, internet, cable, and cell phone. This would be ideal as I can see myself going out and socializing a bit more. I hate living at home.

Here’s the other thing: Everyone in my family wants me to buy a place but I just don’t think that’s realistic for the amount of money that I make and the fact that I live alone (or will be living alone). I understand the argument, yeah, I wouldn’t be throwing away my money on rent and eventually get it back when I move/sell the place. In all honesty, I’d rather wait on purchasing a place and live a better Quality of Life (QOL) during my 20′s. Right now, I would say my QOL isn’t so hot…mostly because I’m still living at home. This discourages me from actually going out and trying to date because what am I going to do? “Hey, want to come over tonight?…to my place…my mom isn’t home.” Yeah, that makes me a keeper. Plus, I just want to live on my own. I feel better about myself. Sure, I’m not saving a lot of money but shit, I have a 401k, I’m ahead of a lot of people my age salary-wise, and I can still save money while paying for rent and my other bills, just not nearly as much. Basically, I would be paying about 700 more than I’m paying right now. I can always buy a place later, with my future wife (who also happens to be a supermodel ).

Oh, I also need to sell my aquarium because when the hell am I going to set it up again?? God knows…do I hear $1000??

During my various episodes that I like to call “browsing the web”, I came across the humorous blog/gossip site called Gawker. The Gawker stands out among others mostly because it doesn’t give a shit about who/what it’s reporting/blogging on/about. Was that enough slashes for you, Mike?/?!

Ok, anyway, One of the funnier sections on the site is called “The Unethicist”. In this feature, an editor takes the same questions he finds on another periodical and answers it in his own special way. Here’s a sample post:

A consulting river scientist, I co-designed a bridge project to include creative use of plants and an elegant solution for handling floodwaters. The design won a major award I’m quite proud of. Some months later, I learned that a member of the awards committee may have been improperly influenced, although I cannot be certain. May I continue to list the award on my résumé? Steve Gough, Murphysboro, Ill.

Your problem is common enough, Steve, and the solution is poetic. Find a serene, untouched stretch of river somewhere. Design the most beautiful bridge the world has ever seen, with shimmering suspension cables held in stunning arcs between the soaring anchor towers. Give the stonework the kind of craftsmanship no longer found in modern construction, and landscape the shorelines along each side of the river to speak to the meditative beauty of the natural world. This will be a great opportunity to express the transformative power of man’s union with nature, not a brute conquering of the world, but a way to live in it. Include creative use of plants and an elegant solution for handling floodwaters.

When this work is done, climb out to the crest of the bridge, stare out at the glorious view afforded only by elevation over water expanses, take a deep breath, and throw yourself in that fucking river and drown to death. You are boring.

Then again, unlike other popular adviceicists, I don’t have an Emmy for work I didn’t even do on an episode of Late Show with David Letterman to gratuitously mention in my responses for no reason at all, so you might want to get a second opinion. I’m still pretty sure no one gives a fuck about your resume, though.

Ah, good times…good times. I still stand by my post title…The internet has gotten rather boring.

Oh, one special note…The site may contain articles that are NSFW…if you don’t know what that means, I seriously question how the hell you got to my site in the first place…

Pablo’s response to someone’s request to purchase his iPod Road Trip:

Dear Mother Jones,

Unfortunately, next week I will be on the moon on a mission to help save the endangered lunar dragon. Sadly my rocket’s cell phone is not currently working and my access to the internet is very poor this time of year due to meteor showers.

The week after that I will perhaps still have the item, so please let me know if you are still interested in purchasing it for your son in Africa, I’d be happy to mail it to you once my payment has arrived — sorry I’d don’t accept storm-pay Office, but would happily accept UNICEF tokens. As a matter a fact I think the African Swallows begin their migration this time of year and arrive in W Africa in mid August — I could send the item tied to their legs.

I really should have titled this post, “Things I miss in Tucson”, but clearly I didn’t. Other than friends and the “beautiful scenery”, the only thing I really miss is The Shanty. That was my bar. It was like Cheers to me. Everyone knew my name. I went there with my buddy Ryan pretty much every weekend, and if we couldn’t go on the weekend, we would stop in during the week. If we had a bad day, we would go play pool that day and clear our heads. Pablo sent me a pretty cool sequence of photos from one of my last nights there and I’m thinking about posting it. I wish I had taken a photo of the front of the bar. Maybe I’ll send Ryan off to go do that for me…since he’s still in Tucson, sucker.

[[Show as slideshow]]

Ok so I created a gallery for the sequence that Pablo sent me…

It’s actually a pretty cool sequence…mostly because I kept the cue ball on the table. I actually have a bunch of photos from the Shanty so what I’m going to do is create it’s own little gallery/album. You should be able to find it under the Photographs section.

FYI, most of these posts are going to be old news…

About 2 weeks after getting back to MD, I was hired by a fantastic sports union in DC as webmaster. The job is great, the benefits are amazing, and the people are fantastic. I couldn’t be happier with the quality of my work environment.

I can’t really say who it is that I work for as it’s a really public industry and any opinions or comments I post on my website should NOT be affiliated with my employer. If you know me, you know where I work. Anyway, I got the job by pretty much scoring the highest on their online proficiency exams and wearing some nice shoes to my interviews (thanks Mike). I actually got really lucky because when I started interviewing I wanted to show them websites that I had created with a SQL backend but my server (and all my other things) where still in transit. I basically had 1 suit and my desktop and the clothes in my suitcase. So I quickly designed a simple CMS app on my desktop with a SQL back-end and borrowed some of my friend’s clothes for the subsequent interviews. After that, I got the job and started my, hopefully very long, career here. I couldn’t be happier with my work.

So it turns out I can change the timestamp on my posts…so that’s what I’m doing. Ignore any weird grammatical inconsistencies – please and thank you.

<strike>Ok, so I know I’ve been back in the East Coast for some time now (since January), but I thought I would post something about the return trip.</strike> Pablo, my brother-in-law, came out to help me pack up some stuff and drive back. We were planning on leaving after Dec. 30th so that I could go to Joe’s wedding but, unfortunately, Earth had different plans for us as the weather was getting really crappy. So we booked it early, sorry Joe. Our route took us through the Grand Canyon and Albuquerque. We, and by we I mean I, had a side plan of perhaps meeting up with my ex, Tina, as she had said she was coming down to New Mexico for New Years. It would have been great to see her but unfortunately she wasn’t able to make it. I learned why she wasn’t able to make it on New Year’s, when she told me she was going to date a guy that she had just met. Personally, I think Tina should get her own category- or maybe I’ll just have a category for each of my ex girlfriends that I keep in touch with. Ok, so that basically ruined the entire drive back for me. I was depressed, pissed off, upset… I mean, it just sucked all around.

Some fun things happened on the trip, though. I have to say, Albuquerque, with 18 inches of snow on the ground, is beautiful. For those who have never been there, It’s basically in the middle of a mountain range. I should have called that girl that I met on spring break in ’01 ’cause she wanted to know the next time I was in New Mexico…oops, sorry Leslie. I’m amazed that I remember her name. Anyway, moving on…

Here’s a shot (cropped) that Pablo took as we were getting into New Mexico (I think). It was like 60 degrees outside too. Fantastic.

I should focus on keeping my posts short, most of my friends have short attention spans…So to sum up the trip back, after NM, we took the southern-most route to avoid the blizzard that was hitting CO and the plains. We then rolled up through the Blue Ridge Mountains on the East Coast. I’ll set up a Photo Gallery to show shots from the trip. We ended up making it back in a little under a week. Aside from the fiasco with the ex, it was a good road trip.
